Digital Display
This is a digital display design for the USU STARS GEAR UP - which stands for Science Technology Arithmetic Reading Students Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. This program is designed to help students to prepare for and succeed in college. The design objective was to create a design that "motivates, encourages, or explains skills necessary to succeed as a student or to reach out for higher education". Another part of the design criteria was that "the text should be readable on a typical school digital display, which are sometimes placed higher up on a wall out of student reach".
Below is the design I created. I chose to go for a motivational approach. I chose the image of the stars because I felt it was in line with the name of the organization. I also wanted to take advantage of the idea of reaching further in life - and what's further than space?
I used a combination the principle of PHI and the rule of thirds to layout the design as far as where I positioned the text, the logo and the silhouetted person as focal point in the image. I used contrast to create emphasis and added visual interest. I did this by using light colors in the text against the dark blue background as well as contrasting font types (serif and stylized sans-serif). I also changed the size and spacing of the text to create a visual hierarchy.
Finally I increased the saturation and contrast in the image just slightly to make it pop more and then applied a layer mask to blend the edges of the image with the background.
